TPS #21-How to Pick a Niche That Evolves with You.

Read Time: 5 Minutes

Welcome Back, Solopreneurs.

Hunter, here.

"Niche down."I hear it everywhere. But not usually any more great advice that follows it. When I first started trying to put my personal brand together, a bigger creator told me to do that if I wanted to stand out. Niche down. But how the hell do you even do that? And should you really in the first place?

For the past 6 months, I've put some pieces together, and if I can help you skip some of my mistakes, that's perfect.

But without further ado, let's niche down.

If you take away anything today, remember this:

You are the niche.

What does that mean?

Well, when people say "Niche down," they really mean to get more specific, and that's where people get confused. For example, my early days of building my personal brand revolved around just entrepreneurship. As you can imagine, that's incredibly broad, so it was hard to get anyone to listen to me because why would they? I wasn't a crazy entrepreneur making tons of money, so I had no authority. A certain creator mentioned I needed to get specific, so I evolved into Solopreneurship, systems, skills, etc.

But how did I choose that? That's where people get stuck.

But ironically, it should be the easiest part.

In today's world of being constantly advertised too, people crave authenticity. So the best way to pick your niche is to simply be yourself.

There's only one of you on this earth. That's specific.

But as we know, people change, and that's the beautiful part. You're going to change. If you change, the niche changes, and that's okay.

People evolve. When Dan Koe started Twitter, his focus was Web development, but we now see how he evolved into the one-person business model. You will go through the same process. To think that you need to pick one specific topic and only talk about that for the rest of your life is ludicrous.

So here's what you need to do.

Embrace your skills, passions, and interests, and align your niche with your life's purpose, your guiding "north star," if you will.

Here's what that looked like for me:

I originally picked entrepreneurship as my board topic, but I was interested in the one-person business model (solopreneurship); I was passionate about living life on my own terms, and I was skilled at creating systems in Notion.

Put that all together, and you get "The Productive Solopreneur."At least for now, as I said, we evolve.

Essentially, whatever makes you, you. Double down on that.

Share your stories, your genuine interests, what you're working on, and listen to feedback from the community. In all honesty, they will help you define your niche more than you might think. Elon Musk once said a well-thought-out critique from someone you respect is worth more than gold.

So listen & learn.

Being an entrepreneur is a constant self-discovery process. But I'm sure you already knew that, or you wouldn't be reading about how to pick your niche.

If we all "knew ourselves" so well, becoming the niche wouldn't be an issue. But we (me) often struggle with clarifying what exactly makes us who we are, and without outside feedback, we get stuck in a not helpful feedback loop with ourselves.

Embrace change and stay flexible. It's hard to think that under a year ago, I had no idea what a Notion or a newsletter was. But now, it plays a significant role in my life. You'll never know what will pop up and for what reason.

Stay open to the idea that you might not have it all figured out right now.

In the long run, that will 10x your growth.

As always, I created this system to help you with the "niching down."

The first step in using this system is defining what you're "North Star" looks like.

That doesn't directly influence your passions, skills, and interests, but it will give you a good idea of how they interconnect.

As you learn more about yourself, you can add what you're passionate about, what skills you have learned or want to learn, and your interests. You can use the checkbox to add "top of mind" to your list, representing everything currently focused on.

Let me know if you found this system useful, I really enjoy making these for all of you.

But that's all I got for now. Thanks for reading.

I'll see you back here next Saturday! But for now, live in the moment.
