TPS #25 –Master Your To-Do List
Read Time: 5 Minutes
Welcome Back, Solopreneurs.
Hunter here,
Picture this:
You're sinking in a sea of tasks, desperately trying to keep your head above water, but you never seem to progress.
You know you need to check those boxes if you want to move the needle, but the weight of the ever-growing list holds you down.
You just need to learn how to prioritize, execute, and plan your to-do list.
However, many entrepreneurs(myself included) struggle with their to-do lists and often crumble because they bite off more than they can chew.
Today, I want to share with you how I’ve been conquering my to-do list on a daily basis.
The One Big Thing: Master Your To-Do List
Many people grapple with their to-do lists because they don't concentrate on their "one big thing" - the most important task they must complete daily.
We all have one, the one thing that we’ve been pushing off.
It can be as simple as making a phone call or complicated as designing a website.
By tackling this task first, you pave the way for success and make measurable progress, like eating the frog's head.
Doing your “one big thing” first pushes the snowball off the mountain.
Looking back and noticing what you did will not only boost your motivation but results come like smoke spewing out a chimney.
Identify your one big thing.
Prioritization
The framework
The system
Time management
Step 1: Identify Your One Big Thing
Imagine standing at the foot of a mountain, gazing up at the peak shrouded in clouds. Your one big thing is that peak, the ultimate goal you need to reach each day.
Ask yourself, "What is the single most important task I need to accomplish today?"
This task should align with your larger goals and have the most significant impact on your success. Write it down and commit to conquering that mountain before anything else.
Step 2: Prioritize Your Tasks
As you trek through the forest of tasks, you'll encounter various paths leading you closer to or farther from your destination.
Create a hierarchy of your tasks based on their importance and urgency. Use a system like the Eisenhower Matrix to sort your tasks into four groups: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important.
This will help you choose the right path and allocate your time and energy more effectively.
And remember, the greats never sacrifice what is urgent for what is important.
Step 3: Develop a Framework
Whenever you have an idea, task, project, etc, have a place to write it down and review it later.
Remember, humans are meant for creation, not storage—keeping everything in your head is like venturing into the unknown without a compass.
It doesn’t have to be flashy or complicated, just something that allows you to regain that precious mental real estate.
Step 4: Implement a System
Find a system that works for you, like a trusty backpack filled with the necessary tools to conquer your tasks.
Whether it's a digital task manager or a simple pen-and-paper list, choose a method that helps you stay organized and focused on your priorities.
I’ve bounced between TONS of management tools. But in the end, the only one that works is the one you enjoy using.
So do what works for you. There is no wrong answer.
Step 5: Master Time Management
Imagine you have a limited water supply for your journey and must ration it carefully to reach the peak or the end of the desert.
This is why time management is important. It’s the life blood.
Set aside dedicated blocks of time for your most important tasks, and resist the urge to multitask. This will help you make the most of the precious resource that is time.
It’s the only resource you will never get back.
And you only have a certain amount of energy every single day.
I've experimented with various task managers and to-do list strategies, like trying different hiking trails to find the best route.
After endless hours of building, I’ve devised a system that works for me.
A task manager that is better than 90% of paid products. (and simpler)
When you master your to-do list, everything else is just easy.
Let me know if you have any trouble incorporating this system into your dashboard.
