TPS #27– The Powerful Art of "Goal" Setting

Read Time: 3 Minutes

Welcome Back, Solopreneurs.

"The great danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark."

Michelangelo

Achieving true productivity - the kind that frees up your time boosts your income, and allows you to live your life on your terms….

What a wild concept.

-And it all starts with one simple yet powerful skill: Goal setting.

Imagine a world where each task you tick off propels you closer to your ultimate vision. Some might call it your “North Star.”

Where your work feels purposeful, and your days end with a sense of accomplishment instead of exhaustion.

That's the power of effective goal setting.

Unfortunately, many of us don't tap into this power. We set vague goals, allow ourselves to get sidetracked, or worse, we don't set any goals at all.

The result?

We end up working harder, not smarter, sacrificing our time, money, and freedom.

And incredibly burning out in the end in a firey ball if misery.

Why do we fail so miserably at goal setting?

  • Lack of clarity: We don't know what we truly want.

  • Overwhelm: We set too many goals at once.

  • Procrastination: We delay starting.

  • Lack of a plan: We don't know how to reach our goals.

But it doesn't have to be this way. (no seriously)

Almost a year ago now, I was struggling with life in general.

I knew where I wanted to go, but I had no idea how to get there. I had one big goal or my “North Star,” but that made everything else feel so far away.

That’s when I realized the power of setting the right goals.

It’s a simple 3-step process.

That changed my life.

Step 1: Clarity

Clarity is the first step to effective goal setting.

It helps you to define what success looks like for you and lays the foundation for your action plan

. Take some time to reflect on what you truly want to achieve. Be as specific as possible - the more vivid your goal, the more likely you are to achieve it.

Most people never take the time to sit down and ask themselves what they want most out of life and then write it down.

Writing your goal down makes it real and tangible.

If you still feel like you don’t know what you’re doing:

You’re not clear enough.

It’s important to take time to reflect.

Make your goal SMART:

•Specific
•Measurable
•Achievable
•Relevant
•Time-bound.

This removes ambiguity and sets a clear path forward.

I’m sure you’ve heard about these types of goals before, but there’s a reason they work.

I like to set goals that are ambitious and on a strict timeline.

This allows me to take bigger risks and come up with more creative solutions than I would have before.

Kinda like my goal of making $100k/mo by the end of the year.

Seems unrealistic.

But, it’s fostered insane innovation in my thinking.

Step 2: Break It Down

Avoid overwhelming by focusing on one major goal at a time.

Trying to juggle too many goals leads to half-hearted efforts and diluted results. Prioritize your goals based on their impact on your life or business.

What one goal, if achieved, would have the most significant positive effect?

You catch more rabbits chasing one at a time.

Break down your goal into smaller, manageable tasks.

Each task should be an actionable step that moves you closer to your goal. This makes your goal less daunting and helps to overcome procrastination.

This also gives you the remarkable feeling of doing something with purpose.

Making burn out– a thing of the past.

Step 3: Action

Overcome procrastination by breaking your goal down into actionable steps. Each small win brings you closer to your larger goal and keeps you motivated.

Starting each day with only a small win, will snowball into taking action on everything you need to.

Even if it’s only as small as reading 15 pages in the morning.

Remember, everyone starts at 0.

Start taking action on your tasks. Don't wait for the 'perfect' time - it doesn't exist. The key is to start and keep moving forward, no matter how small the step.

The only thing that really matters is that you keep moving.

The path will reveal itself with action.

But I can tell you it definitely will not sitting around waiting for things to happen to you.

Use this simple system for tracking, completing, and looking back on your goals.

It’s designed to be intuitive, simple, and effective.

Each goal you set will have a S.M.A.R.T. template for you to fill out so you know that what you're working on matters.

No more feelings of confusion and self-doubt.
